Malcolm X was one of the most influential leaders after the fall of the Civil Rights Movement. Unlike Dr. King, Malcolm was more of a fundamentalist who wanted to do whatever it took to get equal rights whether through nonviolent or violent measures. He became known as the spokesperson for the Islam faith during his time, up until his journey to Mecca. A Homemade Education was the one of the Malcolm X’s essays in which it persuades its readers to broaden their knowledge and develop better communication skills. As a he got older, Malcolm began to compare the education he received from his peers to the education he found in literature. Malcolm was always an articulate person when expressing his feelings and ideas verbally, but he learned that he also needed to improve on how to write those same thoughts on paper. He worked on this challenge like trying to improve any other – by practicing. While incarcerated Malcolm X read a plethora of literature like dictionaries, black history, Islamic teachings, and white supremacy in fact Malcolm X rewrote his dictionary to help himself learn new words. By educating himself, he expanded his comprehension level in what he read. Though his books he also built up more reasons for his hatred of the “bleached” human beings. He noticed how white people seemed to describe historical events in the way they saw it instead of getting different ethnicities to explain how they view them. Malcolm admitted that many of his new findings were the building blocks to his messages as a minister. All in all, Malcolm X shows how by just educating oneself can help you understand the full picture that life has to offer instead of understanding one opinion or mindset.
