The notion of the 1950's model family is negative because it implies that only a man and a women can make a family, which is not ultimately true. Of course reproduction can only happen by a male and a female contribution but in modern society different methods have come about that do not necessarily need someone to have a partner of the opposite sex in order to start and raise a family. Sperm and ovary clinics, midwives, and adoptions are methods that can ensure that anyone can make a family without their being a relationship between just a man and just a women. Many nontraditional families are happy with their lifestyle and their families, while many traditional families are living miserable lives.In today's society, I do not think the model family is very relevant. There are television shows that still broadcast the man and women family unit, however the media has become more open to air television shows that shed light on nontraditional families. The Modern Family, The Game, and Grey's Antonym are a few of the shows that depict single parent families, same sex families, and children being raised by family members and not their parents. Society has grown to understand that not everyone will get the chance to experience the model family lifestyle, however people today are more content with the structure of their family then people in the past were. As long as the media continues to adjust to modern times and illustrates the different types of families people experience then no one will feel stigmatized into thinking their family is not a “real” family. This myth has endured for so long because the idea of family will never go away. Everybody dreams of one day having a family and majority of the thoughts are of the model family.
