One needs to understand the concept of BDSM in order to understand the nature of a dominatrice’s work. BDSM stands for bondage and discipline (B&D), dominance and submission (D&S) and sadism and masochism (S&M).The people that engage in BDSM engage in various practices. Typical practices include role playing, bondage and infliction of pain. Those who take part in the activity are consenting individuals that enjoy partaking in one of the two roles: dominant and submissive. Those who enjoy assuming both roles are known as switches. The roles typically discuss boundaries before engaging and then the dominant the power to do all that he or she wants to the submissive within the boundaries discussed.
A dominatrice is one who offers a professional service of BDSM in exchange for money. The dominatrice dominates her client in alignment with his or her wishes based off the services he or she provides. This is a basic description of a dominatrice. However, it becomes more complicated due to the controversy over whether a dominatrice has sexual intercourse with clients. In R. Barri Flowers book, The Prostitution of Women and Girls, he describes dominatrices as a type of prostitute. This contrasts from the view of many dominatrices who make it point to stress that they do not engage in sexual acts. What many people do not realize that many occupations in sex work can overlap. One can be a stripper and a prostitute, a phone sex operator and a call girl, a dominatrice and a prostitute, etc. All of these jobs have distinctions. This controversy involving the definition makes it unclear whether or not a dominatrice should be classified as a sex worker. For the purposes of this paper, a dominatrice will be classified as a sex worker because the clients get sexual arousal from services.
Just like any profession, BDSM services are characterized by its own terminology, services and other characteristics. A dominatrix is known by several names such as mistress, domme, pro-domme and master (if person is a man). The submissive is called sub for short. The place in which the domme and sub interact is called the dungeon. The dungeon can be in a domme’s home or personal place a work, a BDSM party or a club. The overall term used to describe the acts or services involved in BDSM are often referred to as “play.” There are various services that dommes provide such as flogging, whipping, bondage, slut training, nipple play, age play, race (which shall be discussed later in the paper) and various forms of role play (Raleigh Domination). Furthermore, the profession is practiced all over the world. It seems that the occupation is more prominent in modernized civilizations, more specifically in western societies. A majority of the research data and media regarding dominatrices has occurred in the United States and Europe. In fact in an article posted in 2011acknowledged that business for dominatrices was on the rise in Britain due to increasing popularity (The Independent). On the other hand, in eastern and southern provinces there is little information about dominatrices but it is apparent it exists in certain modernized areas based off the dommes’ websites that can be found.
Most people wonder what drives people to become dominatrices. There are many reasons. Those who are simply doing it for money like the job because it is unregulated and informal work that can potentially increase income drastically. One can make from a simple $80 an hour to $1000 an hour -depending whether they are freelanced or contracted through a company. This attracts women and men from various tracks of life. An NYU student, who calls herself Mistress Ava, spent a summer as a dominatrice because it was a lucrative business move (NY Daily News). A second reason to get into the business is out of enjoyment of BDSM and domination. Many dominatrices proclaim to love their profession out of love for domination. Furthermore, other types of sex workers such as call girls and escorts become dominatrices when choosing to cater to clients wishes. Norma Jean, a former call girl, stated that she acted as a dominatrice a few times for clients to cater to their fetishes. These are some basic reasons as to why some people enter into the profession.
