In the case of the Keebler factory, the utilitarian would view this as a fair and just practice. Utilitarian would view the morality of this situation based on the consequences of the actions performed by the Keebler Company. Although slavery isn’t righteous, the outcome is that Keebler Company will keep producing the delicious cookies that everyone buys and eats, therefore making the millions of consumers happy and fulfilled. Let’s say that Keebler Company owns one hundred slaves to make the cookies. If a utilitarian was to make a chart that measured out the happiness of everyone affected by this issue, the majority of the people would be fine keeping the slaves in the Keebler Company. Because even though 100 slaves and other human rights people may be unhappy about this issue, the millions of people eating Keebler treats would be satisfied. And utilitarianism clearly states that moral rules may be broken as long as the consequences create the most utility. And in this case, utility for keeping slavery in the factory is clearly higher than not keeping the slaves in the factory. So as long as the majority of the people concerned are pleased by the consequences of enslaving elves to make treats for the consumers, there is nothing to really worry about.

Kantians would view this problem in a different way, however. The principles under Kant’s Moral Philosophy denounce slavery. For example, one of the principles is individualism. Kant believed that each person had equal intrinsic value and worth, which meant that nobody was more superior to the other. Therefore, the company has no right to enslave others, because if enslaving others is made as a universal moral law (as one of the principles, Moral Absolutism states), it means that everyone can be enslaved, robbing others the right to live freely in the world.
